Thank you so much for visiting Pick It Up, Oxford - Oxford, Mississippi's Guide to Greener Living!

About Pick It Up, Oxford!

"Pick It Up, Oxford!" is Oxford, Mississippi's guide to becoming greener and to preserving the beauty of the Southern United States and the health of our people. Tips and photographs are courtesy of Live Better Lizzie.

This blog was born out of a lack of web information about green activities, local art events & entertainment and practical consumer advice for newcomers to Oxford. Check this blog frequently for tips on how to greenify your life, step by step, little by little. Consider saving your health and the health of the great state of Mississippi as one of your many works in progress.

Are you new to Oxford? Here's a list of businesses that I could not live without:

  • Chaney's Pharmacy - best selection of birthday/greeting cards in town! They also carry Bumble & Bumble products.
  • Farmers Market - Hands down the best grocery store in town. A small business with a great diversity of foods, spices, teas and Amish delights. Located at 274 CR 101 in Oxford
  • Holli's Sweet Tooth - all health concerns aside - I cannot get enough of the cake batter ice cream with mini M&Ms topping!
  • Honey Bee Bakery - Fresh pastries, snacks and more! Get your Grove dessert platters here! Also a great Saturday lunch spot!
  • James Food Center and Post Office - 505 Jackson Ave East - great postal service and best chicken salad and fresh feta!
  • Larson's Big Star - oldest mom and pop grocery store still standing in Oxford. Located at 1936 University Ave. The Big Star is quick and less crowded than Kroger across the street.
  • Mid-town Farmers' Market - This Spring/Summer market is the best place to find the freshest and most local produce in town. The 2011 season begins in April. They are still selling on Saturdays, 7-11am through the end of October. The market is also open on Wednesdays, noon - 5:30pm. The market is held on the north side of the Mid-town Shopping Center parking lot on North Lamar Blvd.
  • Neilson's - the South's oldest department store - get your Clinique and Estee Lauder products here!
  • Off Square Books - pet the shop cat named Mama Sita and buy an Endangered Species Chocolate Co. Chimp Mint!
  • Office Depot - buy 100% recycled paper products in bulk here!
  • Oxford Maker's Market - best place to find interesting handmade gifts created by Mississippians
  • Sneed's Ace Hardware - Best customer service by far! This place is one of many shops that makes Oxford, Oxford!
  • Star Package - family owned and run, started in 1992 - best service, selection and help finding organic wines!
  • The Depot - if you need something for your home - do not go to Walmart! Check out The Depot first, and find something vintage and original! They have an amazing selection!

WWO invited people from all walks of life to contribute “collective imagination” to confront a real-world issue: the risk our unbridled thirst for oil poses to our economy, climate and quality of life.
